ALUMINIUM OR CARBON – WHAT FRAME SHOULD A CANNONDALE ROAD BIKE HAVE?

In a nutshell:

  • Carbon frame: better features
  • Aluminium frame: good, inexpensive alternative
  • Avoid cheap carbon frames

Our Cannondale road bikes are available partly with aluminium frames (entry-level to mid-range models), partly with carbon frames (mid-range to high-end models).

If you don’t mind the higher price, you can’t go wrong with a good carbon frame. The reason for this is the great properties of carbon: it is light, provides good damping and has a high level of rigidity.
Don’t worry: Even good aluminium frames nowadays convince with great driving characteristics, so they are a great alternative for the tight purse.

Attention: Sometimes very cheap road bikes with carbon frames (i.e. less than 1500 euros) can be found on the market. You should check these offers carefully, as the frames are usually of inferior quality.

WHAT GEARS SHOULD A GOOD CANNONDALE ROAD BIKE HAVE?

In a nutshell:

  • Shimano gears always a good choice
  • Gearshift and gear lever must fit the driver
  • Before buying: test different switching systems

If you want to equip your road bike with high-quality gears, Shimano is always a good choice. The Japanese company has been delighting with quality and technical innovation for years. With a few exceptions, our Cannondale road bikes also rely on the Shimano brand.

For example, the Shimano Ultegra 6800 is installed in the upper middle class, and the Shimano Dura Ace 9000 in the high-end range.
Sometimes it’s the driving style that doesn’t fit the shifting system perfectly, sometimes it’s the shifters that don’t harmonize with the rider’s physiognomy.

Therefore, you should try out different gears before you decide on a particular Cannondale road bike.

THE TYRES OF A CANNONDALE ROAD BIKE – WHAT YOU SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO

In a nutshell:

  • 25 mm tyres on the rise
  • Cyclocross wheels with wide tyres
  • Correct tyre pressure is important

When it comes to road bikes, you have to choose whether you want to put on 23 or 25 mm tyres. The 23 mm tyres were standard for a long time. In the meantime, however, the 25 mm tyres are on the rise. Although these have a slightly higher weight, they shine with their great rolling behaviour.

Accordingly, we have equipped most of our Cannondale road bikes with 25 mm tyres and rely on proven Schwalbe quality.

To avoid confusion, Cannondale road bikes with off-road ambitions (also known as cyclocross bikes) have a significantly wider tyre. Regardless of the brand or width, you should always pay attention to the correct tyre pressure, as this is the only way the tyres deliver maximum performance.

WHICH TYRE WIDTH OFFERS WHICH ADVANTAGES?

23 MM TYRES

  • For a long time, this has been the standard for road bikes
  • Lower rolling resistance
  • Lighter weight
  • Disadvantage: Less driving comfort

25 MM TYRES

  • Are more and more on the rise
  • Better driving comfort
  • Higher puncture protection
  • Disadvantage: Higher weight

WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER WHEN IT COMES TO WHEELS?

In a nutshell

  • Carbon rims rare
  • Aluminium rims usually with better braking behaviour
  • Higher rims for tall road cyclists

Only our absolute high-end road bike from Cannondale is equipped with carbon rims (Mavic Ksyrium Pro Carbon).

The reason: Carbon has a worse braking behaviour than aluminium. Only extremely expensive wheels can compensate for this problem with their ultra-light construction.

When it comes to rim height, you should note that a lower rim scores in the areas of weight and acceleration. A higher rim is heavier, but convinces with better aerodynamics and higher stability. Especially tall or heavy road cyclists are often better off with higher rims.

WHAT SHOULD THE HANDLEBARS OF A CANNONDALE ROAD BIKE BE LIKE?

In a nutshell:

  • Carbon handlebars score points in terms of riding characteristics
  • Carbon only installed in the high-end sector
  • Perfect handlebar fit is a decisive purchase criterion

As with the frame material, carbon is ahead in terms of driving characteristics (damping vibrations, stiffness, weight), but is also significantly more expensive.

Therefore, carbon handlebars are usually only installed in the high-end sector.
Our Cannondale road bikes almost exclusively have good aluminium handlebars. Only models of the Cannondale Supersix Evo series, road bikes of the absolute top class, have a handlebar made of carbon with the Cannondale Escape Hanger.
In any case, a perfect fit should be the decisive criterion when choosing a handlebar. Only if the handlebars and stem fit well with your riding style and stature, you will sit perfectly in the saddle and enjoy optimal riding comfort.
